Bath Abbey, where many Cotswold Way walkers celebrate completing their 102-mile journey, has been a place of worship since the 7th century. The present building was begun in 1499 by Bishop Oliver King, who had a dream of angels ascending and descending a ladder to heaven — depicted on the west front. It is the last great medieval church built in England. The Abbey sits above the ancient Roman Baths, the only naturally occurring hot springs in the British Isles — rising at 46°C, well above body temperature. (Other thermal springs exist at Buxton and Taff's Well, but at much lower temperatures.) The waters rise from a depth of over 2,700 metres.
