Broadway Tower is home to nesting peregrine falcons, the fastest animals on Earth. During their hunting stoop (dive), they can reach speeds exceeding 200mph. The falcons were driven to near-extinction in Britain by pesticide use in the 1960s but have made a remarkable recovery. The tower's elevated position and abundant prey (mainly pigeons and starlings) make it an ideal nesting site. Birdwatchers gather at the tower in spring to watch the adults bringing food to their chicks. If you look up as you pass, you may see one circling overhead.
