The Devil's Chimney is a limestone pillar standing on Leckhampton Hill, created as a remnant of the extensive quarrying that took place from the 18th to early 20th century. The quarries supplied stone for much of Regency Cheltenham below. Local legend says the devil emerges from the chimney on dark nights to sit on the hilltop. In reality, the pillar has been reinforced with concrete and iron rods to prevent collapse. It has been climbed many times, most famously by a group of students in the 1980s who placed a traffic cone on top.
