Tucked among the wild garlic and bluebells of Dyrham Wood, a small wooden box nailed to a post invites Cotswold Way walkers to pause and write a message. The message book inside is filled with entries from walkers of all ages and nationalities — accounts of the weather, reflections on the journey, words of encouragement for those following behind, and occasionally a proposal of marriage.
The tradition of trail message books is found on long-distance paths around the world, but the Dyrham Wood box has become particularly beloved. Maintained by volunteers from the Cotswold Way Association, the books are periodically collected and archived, forming an informal oral history of the trail.

Writing in the message book has become one of the trail's cherished rituals. Many walkers report that reading the entries of those who passed before them — some jubilant, some exhausted, some philosophical — is one of the most moving experiences of their Cotswold Way journey.
